Stress / When Stress Leads to Depression

Avoid trying to deal with depression alone. It’s really important that you tell someone you trust how you are feeling. Find someone in your family or whanau, your partner, a friend or counsellor.

The main signs of depression include feelings of hopelessness and not getting anything positive out of doing things you usually enjoy. And just not being interested.

Other signs include:
  • Irritability or restlessness
  • Feeling tired all the time, or general loss of energy
  • Feelings of emptiness or loneliness
  • Sleep difficulties
  • Weight loss or gain
  • Low self-esteem
  • Problems with concentration
  • Reduced sex drive
  • Thinking about death a lot
  • Anxiety and worry

Often people with depression also find they worry about things more than usual. This is known as anxiety. It can cause physical symptoms like pain, a pounding heart or stomach cramps. These physical symptoms can be difficult to deal with.

Anxiety can be constant, or it may come and go. Either way it’s important to recognise anxiety when it occurs, and to seek help.
